Blog - FTC and SBA Guidance on Cybersecurity - Basics

The FTC and SBA have published guidance for small businesses regarding cybersecurity. The first topic they cover is ‘Security Basics.’ The guidance starts where any good story should start - at the beginning. If these core protections are not in place, then the more complicated and costly protections are of little value.

  • Update software. Companies regularly release patches to correct known security issues, get these deployed ASAP.

  • Backups. If all else fails, a company may resort to simply rebuilding everything.

  • Passwords. To ensure that only the right people can access your systems make sure passwords are required. Give yourself extra credit if the system enforces good, strong passwords.

  • Encrypt devices. Data can often be recovered from stolen, lost, or recycled devices. Encrypt these devices to keep the data safe.

  • Multi-factor Authentication. Passwords are good, but passwords coupled with an email, message, or application alert is better.

  • Secure your Router. Routers are common targets for bad guys and can allow access into your business network.

  • Wireless Encryption. The latest encryption (WPA2) will keep bad guys from snooping your wireless traffic.

  • Train Your Staff. Is your staff aware of common threats they may face and how to detect them?

  • Plan. Have you thought through plans in case of a cyber incident? Take the time now to establish the who, what, when, and how.

These tips may be considered Security 101. As you start your cyber journey (or perhaps are assessing your current cyber program), treat it like any great adventure and start from the beginning. —————————————————————————————————————-

The Federal Trade Commission and Small Business Administration have collaborated to publish guidance (https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/small-businesses/cybersecurity) for these companies. This guidance is a great place to start for business leadership that is worried about cyber issues but aren’t sure where to begin.

North Wonders has produced a self-guided security assessment tool based on the SBA guidance referenced above. This tool (https://www.northwonders.com/offering/#self-guided) allows small businesses to quickly see their cyber hot spots and get actionable guidance on correcting any issues.
